TENTH ANNUAL ‘BLOOMSDAY’ CELEBRATION PRESENTED BY PUDDIN”HEAD PRESS AT THE GALWAY ARMS THE EVENING OF
At 8:00 p.m. on June 16th, Puddin’head Press will present a “Bloomsday” reading from James Joyce’s Ulysses at the Galway Arms in Chicago’s Lincoln Park.
Featuring a sequence of readings presented by local actors, writers, scholars, and devoted James Joyce fans, this will be a continuation of the regular commemorations begun on the 100th anniversary of “Bloomsday” in 2004.
Written during World War One and published by Sylvia Beach, the owner of Shakespeare and Company Bookstore in 1922 (the same year as “The Wasteland” by T. S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway), following the design of The Odyssey of Homer within the pre-war Dublin of 1904, Ulysses offers a microcosm of the human condition that is filled with allusions, extended passages of stream-of-consciousness, and word-play of every kind. A literary adventure of the highest degree, in 1998 Ulysses was selected by The Modern Library as the best novel of the 20th century, and, beginning in 2004, Puddin’head Press has sponsored annual readings form Ulysses hosted by Chicago-based playwright and novelist Jeff Helgeson.
